Ms. Apples Crab Shack
Ric Griffis and Ms. Apple started the business in late 1990. At first Ric and his father Captin Ed Griffis would go out and catch live crabs. Ms. Apple would open up the shack and take care of the few customers.
The building used to be a real shack, an old run down building, hence the original name Brevard Seafood Crab Shack. Brevard being the name of the county we live in, crab is mostly what we sell, and shack is the old, run down building. It wasn’t long before we were able to get 3-4 more people to catch crabs with my father being the best crabber.
Soon I had to sell my crab traps to my father and start working in the Crab Shack with Ms. Apple. The business was starting to grow by leaps and bounds.
I’ve always worked in the back doing the grading, sizing of the crab, cooking, and cleaning the crab as well as taking care of the crabbers. Ms. Apple would stand up front and take care of the customers. Ms. Apple is from Thailand and to this day speaks broken English. Ms. Apple is not very big, kinda short, so I had to go and build her a box to stand out on, so she could run the cash register. To this day, she still stands on the elevated platform, so she can run the register.
She has the greatest of personalities and loves to talk to the customer and makes everyone feel like family. She sometimes cannot remember customers’ names, but always remembers the face and voice of all her customers. Sometimes a customer that lives elsewhere will stop in and Ms. Apple continues a conversation as if the person hadn’t left. Customers are really surprised to be remembered.
Soon the customers’ stated asking for Ms. Apple so much that just this year, we decided to change the name to Ms. Apple’s Crab Shack. Great Idea, don’t you think?
